Please join us Friday, May 5th for the opening of Wildroot Group Exhibition, featuring the work of Nancy Anne Holowka, William Holowka, Peter Monacelli, George Wegman, and Robert C. Whiteside. These five friends and artists founded the Wildroot Gallery in 1978 as a small, non-profit cooperative in a former barbershop on South Avenue. The name came from a bottle of Wildroot Quinine Bouquet hair tonic that the previous tenant left behind! The Wildroot flourished for four years, showcasing work by artists in the group as well as showcasing guest artists and neighborhood children in exhibits that often spilled outdoors onto the sidewalk.
After closing the gallery, each of the artists has continued to create and show their own work widely throughout the region in solo exhibitions and juried shows. βIt is a wonderful reward to say that, after the initial creation of the Wildroot Gallery, each of us has continued with our passion by producing new works for exhibits to share our evolving vision,β Wildroot Group member Robert C. Whiteside states. βI believe that our original purpose was to support the arts and artists with a community-access gallery. We have all expanded on this support with our choice of careers, through teaching, working for and supporting organizations that reflect our sincere values, as well as continuing to support our fellow artists.β
Now, 45 years later, these five friends and artists, Wildroot Group, are still together.
Wildroot Root Group Exhibition opens on Friday, May 5th with a reception at 6pm. The exhibition will be on view Tuesday- Friday 10-6 and Saturdays 10-2, through Saturday, May 27th.
