A display of watercolors and acrylics by Paul Allen Taylor. Paul is self-taught, with watercolor as his primary medium along with working in acrylics. After earning a degree from MCC in mechanical design in 1990, Paul re-started painting at the prompting of his wife June. Prior to then, it was nothing more than a pastime. With the 1991 Clothesline Festival approaching, he decided to apply for exhibition. The show was a success for him in that it validated his artistic self. Not only had he learned more about painting but also realized how much he needed to fulfill his creative side. This was a turning point in his life. In 1993, an opportunity to teach adult education at Rush-Henrietta Schools came about. A mentor once told him, “If you think you know a lot about something, try to teach it.” For the last 25 years he has learned much about painting and how to explain it to his students so that they can. His teaching has taken him to numerous locations in the U.S. and Canada. Paul regularly offers classes at Rush-Henrietta Schools, along with his own solo-promoted workshops and private lessons. As a respected teacher Paul’s students find him approachable, highly skilled and entertaining. He interjects humor as a tool to get a concept to “stick” and insists one must get into trouble with watercolor first to avoid the problems that the medium can present. He says accepting failure is a must. In the summer Paul regularly attends the French Festival in Cape Vincent, NY, the Waterfront Festival in Webster and the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, NY as well as the Clayton Thousand Islands Art Center Arts and Crafts show the last weekend in August. This schedule gives the Taylors time to enjoy their family cottage on the St. Lawrence River in Canada where he has been going since his boyhood. An avid boater, he enjoys following the Great Lakes freighters on the river, a favorite subject of his paintings and photographing the landscape.Paul’s work can been found at the Artstop in Penfield NY, the Lower Mill Gallery in Honeoye Falls NY, and Mares Wares Pottery, Morristown NY. He welcomes visitors to his studio by appointment. You can see more listings of his shows, classes and exhibits on his web site www.paulallentaylor.com
