Pittsford Fine Art Presents Unsentimental Watercolor
Pittsford Fine Art

The watercolors of Laurence E. Keefe are known for their clarity of vision, where the intensity of shadow and light are brought to life on paper.

“All my work aims at clarity,” says Keefe. “The simplicity and translucency of watercolor enables me to probe a range of subjects – from street scenes and sailboat racing, orchids and neolithic figurines, storm surf and night cafes, to sunsets and snowscapes. At heart, painting is a spiritual practice. Vision is all.”

Some of Keefe’s proudest accomplishments as an artist include watching his students grow into accomplished artists, and seeing three of his large paintings being included in the juried Finger Lakes Regional show. He feels this speaks to the potential strength of the watercolor medium.

There are numerous artists that have shaped Keefe’s life. Among them are watercolor master Ralph Avery and sculptors Giacometti and Brancusi. Other inspiration come from the likes of JMW Turner, Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. He trained for years with Jeanne Lindsey, Brian O’Neill, Paul Allen Taylor and Dick Kane. Like most working artists, Keefe takes painting and drawing workshops on a regular basis.

Keefe is a member of the Rochester Art Club, Finger Lakes Watercolor Painters and Pittsford Fine Art.

Classes and workshops are offered by Keefe throughout the year. He teaches the Basics of Watercolor and Watercolor Painting in the autumn, winter and spring sessions at the Memorial Art Gallery Creative Workshop. These are studio instruction courses that take students through the fundamentals to intermediate/advanced levels. He also teaches Outdoor Watercolor, a full week class at the Memorial Art Gallery Creative Workshop. This is held annually at select sites around the Rochester area.

Meet Laurence E. Keefe, the August featured artist on First Friday, August 4, from 5 to 8 pm. He will be happy to speak with visitors about his work and technique.
