“This collection of portraits represents the diverse mix of indigenous people I have experienced while traveling across this nation. In each work, I have tried to capture the subject’s dignity, pride and personal strength. I have also strived to properly represent each individual’s unique tribal identity, in both current and historical context, through appropriate regalia and dress.

My choice of gold, silver and copper leaf captures my subject in a unique way, and further adds depth to my depiction of these special people. For those pieces rendered on hides, I tried to directly connect the subject with the natural world as they knew it.

The inspiration for this exhibit is twofold – one being the influence Native American culture had on my upbringing, and two, my experience serving with these special Americans in the service of our country which is both unknown and often misrepresented.” ~Dan Caster
