Viewing sweet and fun, new (and one oldie) works of Julia J. Wolfe.

“This body of work emerged after thinking about the frequently mistaken phrase, “You’ll get your just deserts!” Like many people, I first heard it as “desserts” rather than “deserts,” thinking it implied that one could earn sweet treats as a reward for good deeds, as opposed to the archaic noun form of the word “deserving”. Its original definition means that a person will receive a punishment that fits their crime. You know, justice – not just [ice cream sundaes].

But the heart (and stomach) hear what they want to eat. So here we have Just Desserts! An exhibition of paintings that float between abstraction and representation. Their titles are playful riffs on dessert- and food-related idioms, revealing content that might call our collective attention to the ironic absurdities and underhanded happenings of history that have been baked into the daily life of our modern consumeristic society and culture of capitalism. And much like a good chocolate, this collection embodies both the bitter and the sweet.”
