Hayley Dayis’ latest series, “Colombian Riches: a Story Told in Natural Pigments,” debuts her hand-foraged natural pigment paintings. Over four years, Dayis has split her time between the US and southern Colombia, collecting clays and soils to create paints that visually document her studies of Colombian land and history.
This series celebrates Colombia’s biodiversity and explores the intricate ties between its natural resources and global history, focusing on resources like flowers, bananas, and coca. Dayis examines the duality of resource extraction—its nourishment and the violence it incites.

As a US citizen painting in Colombia, Dayis seeks to answer questions about our relationship with the land and people that sustain our lifestyles. What untold stories lie behind our food and products? What lessons can we learn from Colombia’s rich culture and environment? How can this awareness transform our daily lives?
