“Robust and Substantial Paintings by Steve Justice” features a series of large scale satirical cartoon portraits in oil paint. From the artist:
“I pay honor (or sometimes dishonor) to a pantheon of hero geniuses, creators, teachers, seekers, crackpots and hangers-on, and although most of my subjects are characters from the past, nostalgia is not my intent.”

“Robust and Substantial Paintings by Steve Justice” is an overview of what I’ve been painting for the past few years, a period that spans our Quarantine and political turmoil and is bookended by a couple freak injuries that slowed me down a little bit, but only temporarily. It all turned me further inward, which is where I work best anyhow.
While my cartoon portraits still explore the creative impulse, the subject of historical misinterpretation and my nagging social concerns have crept into some of the work. When considered sequentially, one can trace the arc of my work during this time, since the paintings are all here, with a few exceptions.”
